Breast reduction
Breast reduction is a popular surgical procedure that involves not only changing the size of the breasts for aesthetic reasons, but also for health reasons. Women who want to improve both their appearance and their comfort in life opt for breast reduction surgery.
Owners of oversized breasts often complain of back, neck and shoulder pain. Also a problem for such women is the care of the delicate skin around the breasts. The folds that form are subject to increased perspiration, the formation of irritation and even wounds that are difficult to heal. Often, excessively large breasts, disproportionate to the rest of the body, become the cause of complexes against the background of physical appearance. During a breast reduction procedure, the doctor properly shapes the bust and forms the desired shape. The reduction can be combined with a breast lift.
Breast reduction – what is it?
Breast reduction involves the removal of part of the mammary gland along with the skin and subcutaneous tissue. This allows to obtain smaller, lighter and shapely breasts, proportional to the rest of the figure. During the procedure, the areola around the nipple is also reduced. The surgeon makes an incision around the nipple, further in the shape of an anchor vertically downward and in the subpectoral fold. During the operation, the surgeon moves the nipple to a new location and sutures the wounds, forming a new breast.
Breast reduction – for whom?
Surgical breast reduction and breast lift can be performed at any age, once the breasts have fully developed. The procedure is especially recommended for women who want to reduce overly generous breasts, compensate for breast asymmetry and firm them.
Recommendations before the procedure
At least one month before the planned operation, it is recommended to give up smoking and drinking alcohol.
Recommendations after the procedure
On the day of surgery, the dressing is completed by putting on a bandage or a suitable bra, which should be worn around the clock until the stitches are removed (day 10 – 14 after surgery), and then for most of the day during the following 4 weeks. The doctor removes the dressing 1 – 2 days after the operation. Removal of the sutures occurs about 7 – 14 days after surgery. Bathing under running water can be taken 2 days after the drain is removed or the wound discharge has subsided. Return to full activities of daily living usually occurs about 2 weeks after surgery, and to exercise after 6 – 8 weeks. Exposure of surgical scars to the sun should be avoided for a minimum of one year after the procedure.
Effects of breast reduction
The first effects of the surgery are visible immediately after the procedure, while the final effect is formulated after about 6 – 18 months. After the procedure, the patient can enjoy attractive, firm breasts that are in proportion to the rest of her figure. The effects of breast reduction are permanent, although they may worsen after weight gain or pregnancy again.
