Gynaecological prophylaxis
The term “prevention” mainly encompasses activities aimed at preventing disease and detecting and treating conditions in their early stages, offering the hope of restoring full health.
In gynecology, cancer prevention is of the greatest importance. Cervical cancer is a disease with special characteristics, which is why prevention is so important in the fight against this problem. Unfortunately, in Europe it is Poland that has one of the highest rates of both incidence and mortality of cervical cancer. Every year it is diagnosed in 2,500 Polish women, and 1,600 women die each year because of it. The disease develops very slowly, usually without symptoms for many years, and is preceded by precancerous conditions, which can be easily detected and cured in the early stages.
Gynaecological prophylaxis – what is it?
The main goal of gynecological prevention is to prevent diseases and, if detected, to start treatment at an early stage of development. Prevention includes regular check-ups, such as:
- cytology
- gynaecological ultrasound,
- breast ultrasound,
- hormonal tests.
Gynaecological prophylaxis – indications
Regular visits to the gynaecologist should be planned by every woman who has intercourse or plans to start intercourse. The patient should be prophylactically examined at least once a year. During the visit, the doctor may perform a vaginal ultrasound, during pregnancy an abdominal ultrasound, as well as prenatal tests: amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. The main indications for the visit are:
- Periodic inspection (at least once a year)
- Planning the start of intercourse
- use or willingness to use hormonal contraception
- planning pregnancy, problems with getting pregnant
- Alarming symptoms and diagnosed diseases
- menstrual disorders
Gynaecological prophylaxis – recommendations before the examination
It is recommended to refrain from sexual intercourse 2 – 3 days before the planned gynecological examination. It is also important to refrain from vaginal irrigation and the use of vaginal globules.
