Hair transplantation is an increasingly popular aesthetic medicine procedure that allows people struggling with baldness to regain a thick and natural-looking hairstyle. However, the procedure requires a great deal of precision, experience and medical knowledge, so not every specialist can perform it. In this article, we will discuss who can perform hair transplantation procedures and what qualifications are required. Who can perform hair transplant procedures?
Hair transplantation – what does the procedure consist of?
The hair transplant procedure involves taking healthy hair follicles (usually from the back of the head) and implanting them in the areas affected by baldness. Currently, the most popular methods are:
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) – a strip technique, which involves cutting a strip of skin with hair and dividing it into smaller units.
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) – a modern method in which individual hair follicles are taken and transplanted to new sites.
The procedure is complicated and requires great precision and experience to ensure a natural result and avoid complications.

Who can perform hair transplant procedures?
The answer seems obvious, but unfortunately, many patients are not fully aware of the importance of having treatments performed by specialists, professionals.
Hair transplantation is a medical procedure, preceded by diagnosis, sometimes treatment and qualification for the procedure on the basis of the collected medical history. Only a doctor can diagnose, treat and make therapeutic decisions in accordance with Polish and European law.
In Poland, treatment can be performed within an Individual Medical Practice or in a Medical Entity. Knowing all this, the answer comes to mind – a hair transplant procedure can only be performed by a doctor.
How to check if the person performing the procedure is a doctor?
The Supreme Chamber of Physicians has made available a registry of doctors(click to go), where you can search for people with a license to practice medicine. Just type in the first and last name to get information on whether the person actually graduated from medical school and is a doctor. What should be of concern? If the person who performs the procedure and claims to be a doctor does not speak Polish – he or she is probably impersonating a doctor and working in Poland illegally.
Every foreigner must nostrify his diploma in Poland, complete a one-year internship in a hospital and pass the Medical State Examination in Polish. If a person does not speak our language, he or she had no chance to obtain the Right to Practice Medicine in our country.
Procedures during hair transplant surgery
During the procedure, anesthetic drugs are administered, which are not completely inert to the body, so it is important to have knowledge of how much of the drug can be administered in a given patient. Epinephrine is also administered to reduce bleeding, and there is also a limit to how much can be safely used. Antibiotics are also used, which are drugs available only by prescription. And since drugs are administered during such a procedure, it is necessary to have knowledge of the interaction of these drugs with other drugs often taken by patients.
What if the procedure doesn’t go as planned and emergency events, such as allergic reactions to drugs or shock, need to be responded to quickly? These are very rare situations, but the doctor is always aware and prepared to react adequately. However, there are facilities outside Europe that offer hair transplantation performed by people without medical training.
Is a technician a doctor?
These are so-called hair transplant technicians. And although it sounds professional, but the problem is that such a profession does not exist. There is no school that trains hair transplant technicians, and there is no such professional title. So who can become a technician? Absolutely anyone who can hold tweezers and operate a tool to incise hair follicles. And thus such a person is appointed a hair transplant technician. It is worth bearing in mind that the title of technician is used unjustifiably and illegally. In order to obtain such a title one would have to complete a technical school in such a field. But no such technical school exists anywhere in the world.
Is it worth entrusting your own health to a technician?
Half-lucky are those patients who end up in facilities where “the procedure is supervised by a doctor.” Such information appears on the official websites of these facilities. There are many brave ones who, tempted by the low price, go to such places. Failed liposuction, scars on the abdomen or failed breast surgery are easy to hide under clothes. However, a failed hair transplant is quite a problem to mask and the cause of many a depression.
Before you decide to have a procedure performed by someone without medical qualifications, ask yourself: would I want a doctor to perform plastic surgery on my nose, or is it enough for me if he just supervises it from another room, and a self-proclaimed technician performs it? In Poland, the European Union, the United States and other developed countries, such practices are illegal, as medical procedures can only be performed by doctors with knowledge of human physiology and anatomy. Unfortunately, not all countries adhere to high standards of patient safety, and are mainly concerned with profits from medical tourism.
How to choose the right specialist?
The decision to undergo a hair transplant is a serious step, so choose your clinic and doctor carefully. Here are some factors to look out for:
Education and certifications – the doctor should have specialization and training in hair transplantation.
Experience – the more procedures performed, the more confident the doctor has the right skills.
Patient reviews – it is worth checking reviews and before and after photos.
Technologies used in the clinic – modern methods require appropriate equipment.
Summary
Hair transplantation is a procedure that requires great precision and medical expertise. According to current standards, it should be performed only by doctors with the appropriate qualifications.
Patients should avoid procedures performed by uncertified technicians and cosmetologists, as this can lead to serious complications. Choosing an experienced specialist increases the chance of a natural and lasting result.
If you’re considering a hair transplant, it’s worth taking the time to thoroughly vet the clinic and doctor to make sure the procedure is performed professionally and safely.
