- Breast reduction
Breast reduction is a popular surgical procedure that involves not only changing the size of the breasts for aesthetic reasons, but also for health reasons. Women who want to improve both their appearance and quality of life opt for breast reduction surgery.
Women with overly large breasts often complain of pain in the back, neck, and shoulders. The problem for such women is also the care of delicate skin around the bust. The folds that form are exposed to increased sweating, irritation, and even difficult-to-heal wounds. Often, breasts that are too large and disproportionate to the rest of the body become the cause of complexes related to physical appearance. During breast reduction surgery, the doctor appropriately models the breasts and formulates their desired shape. Reduction can be combined with breast lift surgery.
Breast reduction – what is it?
Breast reduction involves the removal of part of the breast gland along with the skin and subcutaneous tissue. This allows for smaller, lighter and shapelier breasts, proportional to the rest of the silhouette. During the procedure, the tissue around the nipple is also reduced. The surgeon makes an incision around the nipple, further in the shape of an anchor vertically down and in the fold under the breast. During the surgery, the surgeon moves the nipple to a new location and stitches the wounds, forming a new breast.
Breast reduction – for whom?
Surgical breast reduction and lifting can be performed regardless of age, when the breasts are fully developed. The procedure is particularly recommended for women who want to reduce overly large breasts, balance breast asymmetry, and make them firmer.
Recommendations before the procedure
It is recommended to quit smoking and drinking alcohol at least a month before the planned surgery.
Recommendations after the procedure
On the day of the surgery, the dressing is supplemented with a bandage or an appropriate bra, which should be worn around the clock until the stitches are removed (10-14 days after the surgery), and then for most of the day during the next 4 weeks. The doctor removes the dressing 1-2 days after the surgery. The stitches are removed about 7-14 days after the procedure. A shower can be taken 2 days after the drain is removed or the wound discharge subsides. Return to full activity usually occurs about 2 weeks after the procedure, and to physical exercises after 6-8 weeks. It is necessary to avoid exposing the postoperative scars to the sun for at least a year after the procedure.
Effects of breast reduction
The first effects of the operation are visible immediately after the procedure, while the final effect is formulated after about 6-18 months. After the surgery, the patient can enjoy an attractive, firm and proportional breast to the rest of the silhouette. The effects of breast reduction are permanent, although they may deteriorate after a regaining of body weight or pregnancy.
