Treatment of hyperhidrosis with botulinum toxin

Botox effectively solves the problem of excessive sweating, bringing effects regardless of the cause of increased sweating.

Botulinum toxin is administered directly to the areas where the patient sweats the most (e.g. around the armpits, hands or feet) and does not adversely affect the overall heat transfer from the body.

About hyperhidrosis

Sweating is the result of the work of sweat glands, which are located almost on the entire surface of the human body. It is them that perform thermoregulatory functions in the body – without them we would not be able to function properly. However, in some cases, they work more intensively than we need … Then we are talking about hyperhidrosis, which is associated with many unpleasant sensations, ranging from discomfort to problems with maintaining proper hygiene. Hyperhydrosis may be local or generalised. Generalised hyperhidrosis most often occurs as a result of a disease, such as an endocrinological condition or the use of certain medicines. Sometimes sweating all over the body is a reaction of the body to a strong stress stimulus. Local hyperhidrosis affects those areas of the body where there is the greatest concentration of sweat glands, that is, under the armpits, on the feet, palms, hairy scalp. Botulin treatment is recommended for patients struggling with too much heat dissipation from the body.

Treatment of hyperhidrosis – about the procedure

Botulinum toxin is one of the strongest natural origin neurotoxins known to date. It is produced by anaerobic fermentation by gram-positive clostridium botulinum rods. For many years, this toxin has been used in aesthetic medicine to improve beauty. With the help of botox, we can eliminate mimic wrinkles or crow’s feet. Properly diluted botulinum toxin is also great for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. We can distinguish as many as 7 serotypes of botulinum toxin, however, the best effects in the treatment of local hyperhidrosis are achieved by the use of type A. After injecting the neurotoxin into the skin, the release of acetylcholine is stopped at the level of the neuromuscular plate and synaptic gaps. Meanwhile, it is they who innervate the eccrine glands that secrete sweat. Botulinum toxin is an effective and safe method of treating excessive sweating of various areas – armpits, hands, soles of the feet, as well as the face or scalp.

Hyperhidrosis – the course of the procedure

Treatment of hyperhidrosis with botox takes about 60 minutes. The treated area is anesthetized by infiltration or with a special anesthetic cream. Before the procedure, the patient obviously undergoes a medical qualification, during which the so-called Minor’s test is performed. The area affected by hyperhidrosis, e.g. the armpit, is smeared with a solution of iodine and starch. After about a quarter of an hour, the doctor checks which places under the armpit turn black. For the doctor, this is the information that this is where the concentration of sweat glands is the greatest. Then, with a marker, he marks points separated by approximately 2 cm. This is where Botox is injected with a syringe.

For whom is the treatment of hyperhidrosis?

The most important indication for treatment with botulinum toxin is excessive sweating of various areas of the body. It is worth remembering that although hyperhidrosis does not directly threaten a person’s health or life, it can significantly impede his daily functioning. Excessive sweating necessitates frequent changes of clothes, and the unpleasant smell and visible sweat stains on clothes can cause discomfort, shame and embarrassment, especially in social situations. It happens that a person affected by the problem of excessive sweating gives up social contacts and reduces professional work. However, excessive sweating does not necessarily lead to isolation. Botox treatments effectively solve this problem.

Recommendations after the treatment of hyperhidrosis

Administration of botulinum toxin is a minimally invasive procedure and does not require recovery. The patient can almost immediately return to daily duties. The only recommendation is to avoid saunas and solarium for the next few weeks, as well as foods that increase sweating, including alcohol, coffee and hot spices. Immediately after the procedure, the skin may be slightly reddened and puncture marks may be visible. However, this effect quickly wears off.

Treatment of hyperhidrosis – effects

Treatment with botulinum allows you to get rid of the problem of excessive sweating for a long time. The effects of the procedure are felt after approx. a week, and then they are maintained, depending on the severity of the problem and the area being treated, for approx. 6-12 months. It is not true that the body is immune to the effects of botulinum toxin and once performed procedure must be repeated with increasing frequency.
