Hair regrowth after hair transplant is an important concern for most patients. Let’s take a look at how the process unfolds over the following months.
During a hair transplant procedure, all the necessary hair follicles are first extracted, and only in the second part of the procedure are they implanted. This means that between extraction and implantation, this delicate tissue is stored outside the patient’s body in a special solution at a lower temperature. The hair follicle uses up its remaining energy to survive, but there isn’t enough energy to keep the hair bulb itself alive. However, this is not a problem! Once the follicle is implanted into the scalp, it will regain access to nutrients and begin to regenerate.

Hair regrowth after hair transplant – months after months.
The hair shaft will be shed from the follicle within two to three weeks after the procedure, and from that point until the third month, the scalp in the transplanted area will appear almost smooth. Only about 10% of the transplanted hairs will remain. During this period, patients often worry that their hair is falling out, but this is a completely normal process. Most of the transplanted hairs must shed. Hair regrowth after hair transplant will occur in due time.
Once the follicle has regenerated, stem cells will begin to produce a new hair bulb, which will then start generating the hair shaft. Before it becomes visible above the epidermis, it will take about three to four months. However, from that point on, the hair will continue to grow and gradually become denser with each passing month.
Regrowth after hair transplant – 3 months
After the first three months, the follicles begin to produce the initial hairs, and in the following months, the second, third, and fourth hairs may develop in each follicle (depending on its growth potential). After six months, typically about 50-60% of the transplanted hairs have grown back, while the remaining hairs continue to develop in the following months.
Regrowth after hair transplant – 6 months
By six months, the results of a hair transplant are usually quite satisfactory, as this amount of hair typically does a good job of masking any visible scalp.
Regrowth after hair transplant
After the procedure, hair does not start growing immediately, as it goes through several natural stages of adaptation and regeneration. Initially, a phenomenon known as post-surgical shock occurs, which involves the temporary shedding of transplanted hairs. This is a normal response of the body to stress and micro-damage to the scalp. While the hairs fall out, the follicles themselves remain intact.
Next, the follicles enter a dormant phase, known as the telogen phase, during which they do not produce new hair for several weeks.
This is a crucial stage of regeneration, during which the follicles adapt to their new environment and begin receiving nutrients through newly formed blood vessels. After approximately three to four months, the growth phase, known as anagen, begins. During this phase, the follicles start producing new hairs, which are initially thin and delicate. Over time, these hairs become stronger and denser. The final results of the transplant are visible after about 9–12 months, when the hair reaches its full density and natural appearance.
Hair grows at an average rate of about 1–1.5 cm per month, which translates to 12–18 cm per year. However, the growth rate can vary depending on several factors, including genetics, age, diet, overall health, hormone levels, and hair care. Hair regrowth after hair transplant follows the same natural growth rate.
The fastest hair growth is observed in children and young adults, while the process naturally slows down with age. Hair also tends to grow faster during the summer months when blood circulation in the scalp is improved, and the body produces more nutrients essential for hair growth. Hair regrowth after hair transplant is natural proces and takes some time.
