Lower eyelid surgery

It is a surgical procedure aimed primarily at rejuvenating the face.

Lower eyelid surgery is performed on both women and men. By removing excess flaccid, sagging eyelid skin and fat around the eye sockets, we can get a more refreshed and radiant look. The procedure is performed either under local anesthesia or short general anesthesia and lasts from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the scope of the surgery itself.

Lower eyelid surgery – about the procedure

The thin and very delicate skin under the eyes quickly loses its elasticity with age, making the signs of aging more visible there than in other parts of the face. The feeling of fatigue is additionally intensified by the presence of fatty hernias in this area. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover up the sagging skin and the so-called bags under the eyes with makeup, or eliminate them with creams from the drugstore. However, aesthetic medicine, specifically lower eyelid surgery, can help.

Who is lower eyelid surgery for?

The indications for the plastic surgery of the lower eyelids are:

  • excess flaccid skin under the lower eyelids
  • presence of fatty hernias, forming the so-called bags under the eyes
  • visual field limitation due to the excess fat accumulated around the lower eyelids

What does the lower eyelid correction procedure look like?

Before the procedure of the correction of the lower eyelids

Before a plastic surgeon qualifies a patient for surgery, he conducts an in-depth medical interview with occurring diseases, medications or allergies. This part of the conversation is to exclude any contraindications to the procedure. Then he carefully examines the eyelids and other eye structures and talks with the patient about the expected effects of the procedure. The patient is also required to perform several necessary tests, including: blood count, APTT, INR, prothrombin time, HbS antigen, anti-HCV, glucose and creatinine. In addition, about 7-10 days before the correction of the lower eyelids, the patient should stop taking medications that may disturb blood clotting (aspirin and other anticoagulants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

During the procedure of correction of the lower eyelids

Before the surgeon makes the first incision, he anesthetizes the surgical area by administering an injection of lidocaine. Thanks to this, the patient does not feel any discomfort during the procedure. The cut is made directly under the lash line, therefore the scars resulting from the surgical intervention are practically invisible. The surgeon removes excess skin, fat from the eye sockets and part of the eye’s circular muscle. The wound is closed with non-absorbable sutures, which are removed about a week after the procedure. The patient goes home the same day.

Recommendations after lower eyelid surgery

After the procedure, the area of the lower eyelids may be red and swollen. The eyelid itself may not close properly for some time. However, cooling the eyelid area can alleviate these discomforts. Although there may be pain, it is rarely necessary to resort to painkillers. During convalescence, it is inadvisable to increase physical activity, use the sauna, solarium or swimming pool. The recovery period is approximately 2 weeks. After this time, the patient can resume normal activities.

Lower eyelid surgery effects

The effects of lower eyelid plastic surgery are visible immediately after the swelling has subsided and last for many years. The unsightly bags disappear from the area under the eyes and the skin of the eyelids becomes smoother. The face also looks younger, more refreshed and radiant.
