Hyperhidrosis – treatment methods
Hyperhidrosis (hyperhidrosis) is a disorder that involves the excessive secretion of sweat by sweat glands located almost all over the body. The problem affects men and women of all ages and can involve heavy sweating of the entire body or certain areas, such as the armpits, feet, hands or scalp. Botulinum toxin, or Botox, injections are a modern tool for the effective treatment of hyperhidrosis. In Warsaw, we perform such treatment at the modern aesthetic medicine clinic Kierach Medical Clinic at 4/U5 Chrobrego Street.
Causes of hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis can result from many factors. There are two types of excessive sweating: Primary hyperhidrosis – occurs, for example, as a result of stress or intense emotions. It is not the result of disease. Secondary hyperhidrosis – occurs as a consequence of disease, such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism. Excessive sweating can involve certain parts of the body (such as the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, armpits or face) or be generalized and affect the entire body. Excessive sweating is also encouraged by obesity and being overweight.
Impact of hyperhidrosis on patients’ daily lives
Although hyperhidrosis is not a life-threatening condition that causes obvious health problems, it can make life very miserable for those who suffer from it. Intense sweating under stress or strong emotions often causes feelings of shame and embarrassment. Sometimes the negative feelings are so strong that they lead to reduced social interaction and even make it difficult to focus on work. Excessive sweating of the hands makes it difficult to maneuver objects with precision, and wet feet or armpits can effectively distract from other activities.
Health risks
Excess sweat is also visible on clothing, making it necessary to change clothes frequently during the day. With hyperhidrosis, it is crucial to take thorough care of hygiene, since bacteria and fungi very often develop in the moist recesses of sweaty skin, which can lead to troublesome skin infections. In obese people, a major problem can be the rubbing of skin folds against each other – with hyperhidrosis, this often leads to wounds that are difficult to heal and prone to bacterial and fungal superinfections. What is botox treatment for hyperhidrosis?
Regardless of the cause of excessive sweating, the use of botulinum toxin effectively reduces the action of the sweat glands, while not adversely affecting the body’s overall heat dissipation. Botulinum toxin is a very potent neurotoxin that is produced during anaerobic fermentation by the Gram-positive bacteria Clostridium botulinum (botulism bacillus). Appropriately diluted botulinum toxin type A is injected by the doctor deep into the skin, at the site of a large concentration of sweat glands. The toxin stops the production of acetylcholine at the level of the neuromuscular plate and synaptic gaps, which innervate the eccrine glands that secrete sweat. Botox effectively and safely solves the problem of excessive sweating. Moreover, it has many applications in aesthetic medicine – it is used, among other things, in the correction of wrinkles.
What does the treatment for hyperhidrosis look like?
If you are interested in treating underarm hyperhidrosis in Warsaw, it is worth opting for botulinum toxin treatment, which is safe and allows you to enjoy normalized sweat secretion for about 6-12 months. Treatment of hyperhidrosis is preceded by a detailed medical consultation, during which the doctor takes a history and performs the so-called Minor test. It involves smearing the area affected by excessive sweat production with a solution of iodine and starch. The sections of skin that are stained black are the areas where the greatest concentrations of sweat glands are found. The doctor marks with a marker the points where he will then inject botox. The entire procedure takes about an hour. Before the injection, the doctor applies a special anesthetic cream to the treatment area, so that the patient does not feel discomfort during the procedure.
